A Pair of Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Vessels Listed Unaccounted For subsequent to Leaving Mexican Waters.

A comprehensive search and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Rescue Missions Launched

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine sailors, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been projected to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Aid to the Island

Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures multiple power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy stated.

The nine-person crew are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Recent Aid Delivery

Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and food.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded efforts to ship critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
