Cameron Norrie achieved the most notable victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Although he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this win represents Norrie's first ever success over a sitting world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who is now the fifth English competitor in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to enjoy my performance in the latter part of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the biggest success of my professional life, my first win over the global number one and arguably the most confident athlete in the world right now."

The British player, ranked 31st in the world, also ended Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive elite tournament wins, which was the best series of performances in the Spanish star's early professional path.

Contest Analysis

The top seed appeared to be progressing easily to success early on as he eased in the first set. Yet, the British contender steadily fought his way into the match by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into extended, grueling exchanges. His unceasing steadiness and dependability slowly took its toll.

Through most of the match, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The rising talent looked particularly uneasy striking his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for much of this season, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, the British player gave Alcaraz so few mistakes, keeping up his consistency, fitness and depth the entire contest while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to move inside the baseline and strike effectively.

In the tense closing stages, the British competitor superbly maintained his composure to close out the best player in the sport.

Professional Context

After dealing for a long time due to a significant physical setback and struggles with his game, Norrie fell as low as No 91 this year. Having reached the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the French Open round of 16 subsequently, this win further underlines the experienced player's development as he seeks to return to the elite rankings and beyond. Alcaraz, in spite of his incredible accomplishments, is still hasn't figure out how to deliver his best tennis indoors.
