Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Rebuke
Individuals from across the political divide and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the remarks. She pointed to previous comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of a different individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
