Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued video stills Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
