Larian Studios Clarifies Its Application of Generative AI for Next Project
The developer behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its next major project, creating immense anticipation within the gaming community. However, recent comments from the studio's lead designer have brought clarity to the discussion, touching on the studio's philosophy toward machine learning.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a new message, Larian's director explained that the developer is using AI technology for particular preliminary functions. These involve enhancing pitch decks, producing rough visual ideas, and drafting placeholder text.
Notably, Vincke stressed that the end material in the game will be created solely by human writers. "Larian is writing all the content manually," he said.
Larian is actively increasing our roster of storytellers and are busily assembling dedicated writer rooms.
Given that visual development is being explicitly mentioned — we right now have twenty-three concept artists and have job openings for more artists.
Each initiative we do is incremental and aimed at letting our team spend greater focus on making content.
Every AI system used well is a boost to a creative team process, not a replacement for their talent.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of employing this technology initially provoked backlash among a segment of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke issued additional elaboration on online platforms.
"Our team utilizes machine learning to gather inspiration, similar to we use search engines and physical media," he stated. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then replace with hand-crafted concept art."
He noted, "Larian brings on artists for their unique talent, not for their ability to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had previously detailed the studio's targeted strategy to this technology, grouping its use into primary areas:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: Areas like motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like retargeting animations.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to speedily create basic versions of mechanics to experiment with concepts ahead of complete development.
- Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how machine learning could in the future enhance emergent reactivity, especially in simulating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.
He explicitly affirmed that key artistic disciplines — including music composition — are are absolutely not areas where the company is cutting human involvement. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these very fields.
"Larian is not releasing a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not looking at trimming down creatives to swap them out with AI," Vincke summarized.
