New Year's Celebrants Urged to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Meteorologists have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Go Ahead Despite Alerts
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.
Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, meaning additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.
Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.
The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Advisories Activated
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
