NY Launches Portal for Citizens to Report ICE Videos After Arrests of 4 American Citizens
New York state AG has launched a fresh reporting form encouraging citizens to submit images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout the state. This step follows a shortly after a major ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting large-scale demonstrations.
American Citizens Arrested During Raid
A congressional representative disclosed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were detained and kept for "nearly 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"All New York residents has the right to reside free from terror," the AG wrote in a release.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement during the raid, I encourage you to submit that material with the authorities. We are pledged to assessing these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The platform includes options to upload visual evidence of the raid, along with a field to specify geographic details. Before submitting, submitters must mark a option that confirms that "authorities might employ any evidence provided in a public document, including in a lawsuit or public report."
Information about the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say involved more than 50 ICE personnel, occurred in a popular district of NYC where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available widely – often to tourists.
Videos of Tuesday's raid depict several masked and armed personnel securing and holding a individual, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of residents followed the agents along the roads. An armored military vehicle was noticed rolling through the city streets.
Leadership Statements
At a midweek briefing held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democrat, announced that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He clarified the citizens were freed on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This constitutes a armed campaign to incite tension. It is purely a pretext to provoke conflict for the government to deploy the troops to stop unrest that they have created."
Broad Criticism
Fury over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three mayoral candidates condemned the incident, along with the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate stated.
New York City immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to go after street vendors trying to make a living. This raid had no connection to community security and focused completely on frightening communities and communities," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
ICE policy forbids the holding of citizens and the organization has claimed it will not arrest or detain American nationals. However, independent reporting has found that more than 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by ICE since the beginning of the current administration.
Ongoing Trend
Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in the state and nationwide recently.
A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an housing center of the current administration. Demonstrations targeting ICE are commonplace as are claims of force and inhumane treatment.
Recently, a submission submitted by advocacy organizations alleged inadequate care of pregnant women in government custody.
