The pre-Ashes verbal sparring is escalating further, with ex-England bowler Broad stating that England will confront "probably the worst Aussie squad since 2010" during their tour this winter.

Warner's Bold Prediction Met With Doubt

The former England bowler's claim was in response to David Warner – a long-time Ashes rival – predicting a clean sweep for the home side. "Should the skipper [Pat Cummins] be absent, they could perhaps snatch a single victory," Warner commented.

The Aussies remain undefeated in a Ashes match on home soil since England’s series win in the 2010-11 tour. Their 5-0 win in the following series – following seven losses in their last nine matches – came before 4-0 Ashes triumphs in 2017-18 and 2021-22.

Squad Doubt and Injury Concerns for Australia

However, the No 1-ranked Test team, who have lost only one of their past 13 bilateral series, approach the forthcoming contest with questions over the composition of their batting lineup and the fitness of Pat Cummins, who is unlikely to feature in the first Test at the Perth stadium because of a back issue.

"It’s very, very difficult to triumph on Australian soil as an England side, or any visiting team," Broad remarked during his podcast. "The Australians are massive favourites."

"Australia are under the greatest expectations because they’re anticipated to prevail, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got question marks over their team and question marks over their captain’s fitness. It's not unreasonable in thinking – it’s actually not an opinion, it's a reality – it is likely the worst Australian team since 2010. And it’s the best English team in over a decade. These factors point towards the reality that it’s going to be a brilliant Ashes series."

Comparison to Historic Series

"The Australians have remained so consistent for a prolonged duration that it was clear who was going to open the innings, who would bat, which bowlers were available, and they lack that certainty now. It’s very much a comparable scenario to the 2010-11 period when England went and won there. The reality is Australia generally have to be bad to be defeated at home and England have to be very good. England have a great chance of performing exceptionally and the Australians face a real possibility of underperforming."

Team Decision for the Visitors

A major issue for the English camp remains their selection at the number three position, with Ollie Pope and Jacob Bethell vying for the role. Cook, whose 766 runs paved the way for the visitors' series victory 15 years ago, thinks it would be "strange" for Ben Stokes’ side to move away from Ollie Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the last three years.

"I'd select Pope at number three," Cook stated. "I think it’s quite an easy decision. They have a player who has been part of this buildup for several years. He has led the team, he has delivered remarkable performances for the national side and he scores centuries. He understands how to make big scores in first-class cricket. If they drop him now, I think that changes the whole dynamic of what they’ve built up over the recent years."

While hailing Jacob Bethell as "a hugely gifted cricketer", Cook added: "It would be a major risk [to pick him] because should it fail what is the fallback option, a player you recently discarded? They have committed heavily in players such as Pope and [Zak] Crawley that it would be highly odd to change it now."

Captaincy Change and Commentary Team

Ollie Pope has been replaced by Brook as the team's deputy skipper but, according to Cook, that will "take the pressure off" the Surrey batsman.

"The management has acted decisively on that, thinking if there is an injury to Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Harry Brook who has led the ODI team and it's evident that he seems to be a natural fit. This will take the pressure off. I believe it won't weaken his position. Certainly it will have disappointed him because anytime you get taken off a leadership thing it wouldn’t be ideal, but I doubt it undermines him."

Cook will be in Australia as part of the broadcast team of the Ashes, and will be joined by fellow Ashes winners Finn and Swann as on-the-ground pundits. The network will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will use a mixed approach, with commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch to work off-site in the UK, while Cook, Finn and Swann deliver expert analysis from on location. Ebony Rainford-Brent is also part of the broadcast team working off-site, with the on-ground coverage to be presented by Becky Ives.
