In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying the Russian leader in a new film. This production, though, may align so closely with the carefully constructed version promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show released last October, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. A new film inspired by a popular book aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a casting call with many contenders. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the state in practice.

• According to a journalist who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his clandestine activities in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not involved with field operations.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by the actor's arrival as 007. The grittier version led Russian media and social media to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with his appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a small victory. Its exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. He is hinted at through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently echo the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
