Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
