The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
