The megacity Awakens to Toxic Smog Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Several parts of the capital recorded an air quality index above 500, which equals ten times the recommended level recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x higher than safe standards.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Developments

For the past four years, the government had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

Yet recently, the newly elected regional administration approached the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, the court agreed to the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Many monitoring devices throughout the city showed contamination reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during celebrations in at least three years.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also triggered a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst records ever documented in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is resulting from a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing toxic smog that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air sets in.

Health and Financial Toll

Public health and economic consequences on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various research.

The contaminated air leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

The pollution is projected to be causing ten thousand premature deaths per year in the city.
