The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
