The retail giant Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during a single visit. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, based on a company memo shared with employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received widespread backlash for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. What exactly counts as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, in theory an eager reseller could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities over several hours.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers seek to sell unopened products at a markup, whereas some hunt for rare cards that can command sky-high values. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.

Upcoming Releases

The new rule aligns with the imminent release of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the ongoing demand and likely reseller attention.

Hopefully, the retail limits will curb bulk purchases and increase access for true fans and casual players alike.
