Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his first appearance.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team chase future success.
After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Manchester.
