Zohran Mamdani states he will live in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately following his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district known for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live there, the community will always live inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Political Debate
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
City residents see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
